To combat irregular migration and human smuggling, the Netherlands will temporarily reintroduce controls at its internal borders starting December 9. This measure is part of a proposal from Minister Faber of Asylum and Migration, which has been approved by the cabinet. Following this decision, the minister informed the European Commission, the Council, member states, and the European Parliament, in line with EU regulations.
This measure aims to limit the influx of irregular migration into the Netherlands. Individuals who do not meet the entry or residency requirements will be transferred in accordance with European regulations and existing agreements with neighboring countries, including Belgium and Germany. The border controls are designed to minimize disruption to economic and commuter traffic in border regions, with consultations held with local authorities to address these concerns. At airports, border controls will be limited to specific flights identified as higher risk for irregular migration or cross-border crime.
Implementation
The reintroduction of border controls is a temporary and exceptional measure, planned to last six months starting December 9, 2024. EU law mandates a four-week advance notification period. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee will conduct these border checks within its current capacity, deploying personnel based on information and risk assessments and actively sharing intelligence with neighboring countries. Depending on resources, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee may gradually expand the scope of these controls.
