Energy allowance for students

Heerlen

Students may also be entitled to a one-off energy allowance. The mayor and aldermen of Heerlen accommodate this group in the new policy rule for one-off energy surcharge.

The court in Gelderland ruled last summer that students as a whole group are wrongly excluded from the one-off categorical provision of the energy allowance. This energy allowance is intended for low-income households. As a result of this ruling, the Heerlen College has decided to no longer exclude students. Previously, the advice of the Minister had been followed. He indicated that the living situation of students is very diverse, also in terms of energy costs.

All rejected applications for the one-off energy allowance from students will be reviewed by the municipality of Heerlen. If they still meet the current conditions, they will automatically receive a review decision. There is no need to submit a new application. Students who have not yet submitted an application this year are urged to do so. However, they have to meet the following conditions: they have to live in an independent living space and have their own registered energy contract. Students with an all-in rental contract that is being increased can submit an application for individual special assistance. The application forms are available on the municipality website www.heerlen.nl. Applications can be submitted until March 1, 2023.
